World Equipped Championships 2021 - 74kg class

The final session of Day 2 of the World Open Powerlifting Championships was the 74kg class.

Reigning world champion and strong favourite Kjell Bakkelund of Norway missed his opener on depth and then failed to stand up with his second. The referees turned down his third squat of 315kg two to one on depth but, in a dramatic twist, the jury overturned the decision and Bakkelund shot into bronze medal position. Meanwhile, the legend that is multiple world champion Jaroslaw Olech of Poland pulled out a strong lead with a 350kg squat ahead of ROC’s Sergei Gaishinets with 325kg.

Olech got all his benches in and kept his lead at sub-total. Bakkelund moved into second place but was under pressure from Ecuador’s Alex Ochoa and Glaishinets, only 2.5kg and 5kg behind respectively. However, Bakkelund took the lead by 2.5kg after the first round of deadlifts and maintained it after the second. Alexis Maher of USVI pulled 329kg on his second for a new world record.

Olech missed his third, meaning he could not do better than second. Bakkelund pulled 315kg for a 857.5kg total but had to wait to see if Gaishinets could pull 322.5kg to snatch the win. He could not! And Bakkelund won the world title in front of his home country crowd, taking the roof off in Stavanger.
