World Equipped Championships 2021 - 59kg

Day 2 of the IPF World Open started with the 59kg and 66kg classes lifting back to back.

In the 59s, multiple world champion and world record holder, Sergei Fedosienko of ROC led the field from the opening squat. He looked like he was going to take a run at extending his own bench record but missed his second at 192.5kg giving Yi-Chun Lin of Chinese Taipei the opportunity to move past on bodyweight. Sergei came out again for 192.5kg and was successful, status quo restored.

With Fedosienko nearly 30kg ahead going into deadlift, it seemed unlikely that he would be challenged for the world title but he didn’t have it all his own way on deadlifts with USVI’s Christopher Tran and Yi-Chun Lin both opening with the same weight as him at 240kg but Sergei took bigger jumps and nailed all his attempts, giving him a full set of gold medals and yet another world championship win to add to his 20+ previous titles.

The rest of the podium race was tight with only 2.5kg between Lin and Franklin Leon of Ecuador going into the final round of deadlift. Leon’s grip went on his final attempt, leaving Lin to pull for silver but it was just too heavy, leaving him with the bronze and Leon with the silver.
