In Memoriam - Walter Thomas

Dear Friends of Powerlifting,

It is with great sadness that I share with you the passing of Walter Thomas from Midwest City, Oklahoma, USA. He was 76 years old.

Walter was a 10 time USPF Senior National Open Champion, and won 4 IPF World Open Powerlifting Championships, with his last Gold Medal coming in 1994, in Johannesburg, South Africa, at age 48, in the 82.5kg weight, making him the oldest lifter ever to win an Open World Powerlifting Championship. He was also the recipient of 3 IPF Silver and 1 Bronze Medal at the IPF World Open Championships.

In 1981, Walter also won the gold medal at the first ever IWGA World Games, held in Santa Clara, California. Walter also served as an IPF Category II Referee.

On top of being one of the best lifters ever, Walter was always known as a gentleman, as well as an ambassador of our sport.

On behalf of the IPF Executive Committee, I send to Walter’s family members, friends and to the US Athletes our sincerest condolences.

We shall remember him! May he rest in peace.

With sincerest regards,

Gaston Parage
President
International Powerlifting Federation
